HyMover - Hydrogen Truck Cooperation
Hymover – Hydrogen Fuel Cell Tractor Units with Batteries and Smart Information and Communication Technology
Saxon automotive suppliers and manufacturers are jointly developing and piloting a smart overall package for the series deployment of 40-ton fuel cell tractor units on medium-range automotive logistics routes. Since the beginning of the year, it has been funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) with 3.12 million euros.
For freight transport in Germany, trucks with a payload over 3.5 tons and tractor units travel approximately 22.91 billion kilometers on around 258.7 million trips annually. Every effort to reduce pollutant emissions in freight transport contributes significantly to a healthy life for humans and animals. The combination of electric drives with fuel cell technology and hydrogen fuel in the heavy-duty commercial vehicle sector appears promising in the journey to decarbonize our economic system in this century. The transition to alternative propulsion systems in transport logistics is necessary to initiate the required transformations in freight transport to achieve CO2 emission reduction goals in Germany.
This is where the new project comes in: Two tractor units will be equipped with electric drives and fuel cell systems and tested for their practicality in two pilot scenarios. The project will deliver results and, in particular, answer questions about the extent to which fuel cell tractor units can achieve meaningful deployment in the field of transport logistics in the future. With a focus on fuel cell and hydrogen technology, key technologies for transforming the energy system will be advanced through research and development efforts.
In collaboration, the companies AMZ – Automotive Supplier Network Saxony (consortium leader), FAUN Umwelttechnik GmbH & Co. KG, glts cotech GmbH, and the associated partners Porsche Leipzig GmbH, Schnellecke Transportlogistik GmbH, and Volkswagen Sachsen GmbH are working together.
