The automotive industry, with over 95,000 employees, is Saxony’s top-selling branch. It contributes more than a quarter to industrial sales and over a third to foreign sales.

Motor vehicles from the “Autoland Saxony” have provided mobility for over 100 years. It was from here that innovations such as left-hand drive or front-wheel drive began their international triumph. Today, the “Autoland Sachsen” with five vehicle and engine plants from Volkswagen, BMW and Porsche as well as around 780 suppliers, outfitters and service providers in the industry is one of the top German locations. Around every eighth passenger car built in Germany comes from Saxony.
The automotive industry is also the engine of the manufacturing industry in Saxony. The more than 95,000 employees, more than 80% of them in the supplier industry, generate over a quarter of Saxony’s industrial production. From A for drive to Z for accessories, the automotive suppliers in Saxony can develop and manufacture almost all components and parts required for a vehicle, as well as the necessary production equipment.
Saxony is also in “pole position” in the second automotive revolution. Today’s fields of innovation are modern hybrid and electromobility solutions, developments for autonomous driving, lightweight construction in an efficient material mix, resource-efficient production technologies and new traffic concepts. Here, industry and research work hand in hand and promote solutions for sustainable mobility.
